Just downloaded Sharepoint Portal Server 2007. I am really looking forward to see how this works, after all it is the best example of how to build an enterprise level ASP.NET application. It uses most of the features of ASP.NET 2.0 and builds a lot more on top of it.
Over the next few days I am going to go deep and try and learn as much as possible from SPS 2007. I have created a mini web farm (two machines networked with Microsoft Network Load Balancing) and a third server that would host the data. I have read that sharepoint keeps all it's documents in SQL Server and hope to see what kind of indexing schemes they have applied to make it super efficient.
Right now I am making too many assumption and am expecting to see and understand at least some code from the SPS bits. Only time will tell as to how many of those assumptions stand true.

I can sense the frustrations coming :)).
Just curious, what OS system will you use to set it up? Does it require the Windows 2003 server for 64 bits? Is it true that for office 07, it requires the installation of Windows Vista? If that's the case, I wonder how many current users would be willing to upgrade. The current MS Office version is a matue enough for majorite of the users. Any adds-on in Office 07 is an attraction to the developers, not necessary to the end users.

A. Any flavor of Windows 2003 will work. I am going to use Windows 2003 Server Standard.

A. No, you do not need 64 bit servers, but be prepared, Microsoft has made a commitment to x64 software only starting now. Which means Exchange 12 will work only on 64 bit machines and so will the future versions of Windows Server Operating Systems following Longhorn. They plan to start making Client Operating Systems x64 only around 2008-2009 timeframe.

A. No, it will work on XP as well. I think there are a lot of productivity enhancements they have made. I think the end users are going to be very happy with Office 2007 compared to Vista. On Vista developers are going to be a lot more happier than end users.

I am really not sure about this, but I am sure they will add tons of stuff for developer, especially since they are now planning office server products. Wonder where all this is going!
I did use Sharepoint 2007 a bit and I am not very impressed. For every small thing they navigate to a different page. If these guys did invent AJAX 10 years ago, how about using it in a product like Sharepoint. I see a lot of screens like new contact entry that can be a popup (a dhtml popup as opposed to a new browser popup). What that would do is, keep the user on the same screen as opposed to navigating away and coming back to the same screen.
